S'mores is another beautiful senior cat whose owner had problems and relatives took her to a shelter.  When surrendered, she had not been brushed in a long time, and her long hair was matted so badly that she could not bear to be touched.  We brought her to a vet, who had to sedate her to shave off the mats.  Once that was fixed, S'mores began purring as loud as a motorcycle engine and she has not stopped purring since.  She is super-lovable and a perfect pet for a person who wants a lapcat and does not mind combing her hair daily.
